How to Write a Culinary Resume

Before you start working on your culinary resume, you need to decide what format you’re going to use. There are three common resume formats: chronological, functional, and combination.

The chronological resume format is the most popular and it’s the one that we recommend. With this type of resume, your experience is listed in reverse chronological order – with your most recent experience at the top. This is a great option if you have a strong work history that you want to showcase. Also, it’s important to know how to fill each resume section.

What Culinary Resume Should Include?

  1. Name and contact information.
  2. Resume summary.
  3. Skills.
  4. Education.
  5. Work experience.
  6. Additional relevant accomplishments.

Resume Summary for Culinary

A resume summary is a short, powerful statement at the top of your resume that tells the hiring manager who you are and why you’re the perfect candidate for the job.

If you’re not sure how to write a resume summary, take a look at our samples below. Just remember to tailor each one to fit your own experiences and qualifications.

Talented chef with 5+ years of experience. Skilled in staff management and creating menus. Experienced in operating various pieces of cooking equipment and tools. Bringing forth advanced food preparation techniques and the ability to serve wonderful food in a timely manner.

Culinary Resume Skills Section

Including a skills section on your culinary resume is a great way to showcase your abilities and skills in the kitchen. But what skills should you include? And how many?

Here are some tips:

  • Include a mix of hard and soft skills. Hard skills are specific, measurable abilities that you’ve learned through experience or education (e.g., knife skills, menu planning). Soft skills, on the other hand, are personal attributes that you possess that can help you succeed in any job (e.g., teamwork, communication).
  • Include a mix of technical and non-technical skills. Technical skills are abilities that you’ve learned through experience or education that are specific to the culinary field (e.g., cooking techniques, food safety). Non-technical skills, on the other hand, are abilities that can be useful in any job (e.g., customer service, time management).
  • Don’t overload your resume with too many skills. Stick to 5-10 of your most relevant and impressive skills.

Some samples of skills that you could include on your culinary resume are:

  • Include your high school diploma or GED if you don’t have any other education.
  • If you have some college experience, include the name and location of the school, as well as the type of degree you earned (e.g., Associate’s Degree in Culinary Arts).
  • If you have a culinary certification, include the name and location of the certification program, as well as the type of certification you earned (e.g., Certified Executive Chef).

Some samples of education that you could include on your culinary resume are:

High school diploma, XYZ School

Associate’s Degree in Culinary Arts from XYZ Community College

Culinary Resume Work Experience Section

The experience section is where you’ll really get to showcase your skills and show the hiring manager what you’re capable of. But how do you write a strong experience section? Here are some tips:

  • List your experiences in reverse chronological order, with your most recent experience at the top.
  • Include the name and location of each employer, as well as your job title.
  • For each experience, include a brief description of your duties and responsibilities.
  • Use bullet points to make your experience section easy to read and scan.

Some samples of experiences that you could include on your culinary resume are:
